Local agencies receive $2.4M in support from Appalachian Power Foundation

CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Appalachian Power (APCo) recognized the crucial work of more than 80 organizations by providing over $2.4 million in funding in 2025 through the Appalachian Power Foundation. The support aims to empower initiatives focused on first responders, food and housing insecurity, disaster relief, and educational programs, among others, located within the company’s service territory.

Scott Jones, external affairs manager in West Virginia, recently presented a $60,000 donation to S.A.F.E., a sanctuary for women and children escaping domestic abuse.

“S.A.F.E. is providing help to those who truly have nowhere else to go. I’m thankful we were able to support their mission,” Jones said. “It brings me comfort to know that, at least for a moment, these women and their children have a safe haven—a place where they can find solace and security together.”

Jones emphasized the importance of this funding in meeting essential needs such as food, clothing and shelter. A portion of the donation will specifically address urgent needs, including food supplies, beds for residents and necessary roof repairs.

Alice Walker, executive director of S.A.F.E., stated, “This grant will help keep our domestic violence shelter and rape crisis center running, and provide much-needed basic and essential needs and services to the survivors that we serve.”

APCo provided approximately $665,000 to assist first responders in more than 20 counties and municipalities to acquire essential equipment, including a gear decontamination washer, drones, and rescue equipment, as well as financial assistance with their training needs. Additionally, 25 organizations received funding to fight food insecurity through meals, food boxes and pantry supplies, while $250,000 was allocated for essential housing repairs.

In addition to supporting vital community services, this funding has helped advance educational opportunities for both children and adults. Agencies receiving assistance included programs providing English-Spanish language instruction, as well as those expanding work-based learning, internships and career readiness.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with these incredible organizations that provide essential services to our communities,” said APCo president and chief operating officer Aaron Walker. “We hope that our contributions will not only meet immediate needs but also foster hope and positive change for a brighter future for everyone we serve.”

The Appalachian Power Foundation is a non-profit philanthropic organization funded through shareholder dollars.
