CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One exceptional Girl Scout, Morgan Harris from the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, has recently received the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award and was awarded a $5,000 national scholarship in recognition of her exemplary Gold Award project.
Harris, an Ambassador in the Girl Scouts, led the development of an official Monarch Waystation pollinator garden for butterflies at Black Knight Municipal Park in Beckley, West Virginia.
Her project, titled “Monarch Conservation through Environmental Stewardships & Increasing Empathy through STEM,” aimed to establish a habitat for Monarch butterflies, which have recently been classified as an endangered species.
Harris also played a significant role in educating her fellow Girl Scouts and community members about the decreasing population of Monarchs, the impact of land development and herbicides on milkweed, and the importance of milkweed in the Monarch’s development.
By receiving the Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship, Harris’ accomplishments have been acknowledged at a national level, highlighting her leadership and citizenship skills.
Beth Casey, the chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond, commended Harris for her exceptional dedication and perseverance in addressing a critical need in her community.
The Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award Scholarship aims to recognize outstanding Gold Award Girl Scouts whose projects embody the essence of the Gold Award. Scholarship recipients receive a $5,000 scholarship for post-secondary education, national recognition on the 2024 Gold Award Class webpage, and local promotion showcasing the impact of the Gold Award.
