BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A man was arrested after police say he was found with a handgun during a football game at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley Friday night.
According to the Beckley Police Department, officers were alerted shortly before 9 p.m. that an adult attending the game was allegedly in possession of a firearm on school property.
Police said the man became combative and resisted officers when confronted. Following a brief struggle, officers took him into custody and found him in possession of a handgun.
The suspect was charged with possession of a firearm on school property, violation of a domestic violence petition and obstructing an officer.
Woodrow Wilson High School said administrators and law enforcement responded promptly to the incident and that there was no known ongoing threat to students, staff or spectators.
“The safety and security of our students, staff, families, and community members remain our highest priority. We appreciate the swift response and assistance of the Beckley Police Department,” the school stated.
The incident remains an active law enforcement matter. Beckley Police said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
