ELKINS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One man has been arrested after falsely reporting that men in trucks were committing obscene acts against children in a Walmart parking lot.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, July 25, 2024, police responded to a false report of a crime at the Walmart on Beverly Five Lane near Elkins.
The report was made by Stephen Mason, who claimed that individuals in black trucks parked at the location were committing obscene acts against children in the store’s bathroom.
Deputy J. Wolfe contacted Mr. Mason and instructed him to avoid the trucks and stay on the opposite side of the parking lot.
Upon arrival, Deputy Wolfe spoke with Mr. Mason, who reiterated his claims about the alleged criminal activities.
However, after investigating the scene and speaking with the occupants of the trucks, Deputy Wolfe found no evidence of any wrongdoing.
The children present appeared happy and healthy, according to police.
Mr. Mason, who appeared under the influence of a controlled substance, exhibited symptoms such as pinpoint pupils, sweating, and head shaking.
He was known to law enforcement for previous incidents involving breach of peace and disorderly conduct.
Deputy Wolfe, along with Deputy L. Elbon, determined that Mr. Mason’s accusations were unfounded and arrested him for false reporting.
Mr. Mason was taken to the Randolph County Magistrate Court and then transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
