BOONE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Boone County man was arrested Monday evening following a reported domestic violence incident at a Park Avenue West apartment.
According to authorities, deputies were dispatched around 5:37 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2026, after Boone County E-911 received a call from a man who said he had gone to the residence to buy a dog and believed a woman inside was being assaulted.
When officers arrived, a witness told them the male suspect had fled the apartment immediately after the 911 call and was hiding at West Madison Park. Officers conducted a brief search and located the suspect, identified as Zachary Cheeks, under a shelter at the park.
For officer safety, Cheeks was placed in handcuffs. During the process, he reportedly became agitated and attempted to pull away while shouting that no one listens to him. Officers were able to calm Cheeks and escort him to a patrol vehicle without further incident.
While Cheeks was being detained, a woman later identified as the victim exited the apartment, yelling that there had been a misunderstanding and asking officers to release him. Officers instructed her to return inside, which she did.
The victim later told deputies that Cheeks had grabbed her as she tried to open the door for the witness. However, the witness provided a different account, stating he could hear the couple arguing inside the apartment and that when he opened the door, the victim had blood on her face and asked him to call police for help.
Based on the witness’s statement and the victim’s admission that Cheeks had grabbed her, officers placed Cheeks under arrest. The incident occurred in Boone County.
