MINGO COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A quiet night in the Mingo County community of Ragland was shattered just after midnight on April 19, when a local man allegedly broke into a residence on Canada Drive, attempted to steal prescription medication, and seriously injured the homeowner’s elderly dog in the process.
According to law enforcement, Deputy M.E. Tiller responded to the burglary call after the homeowner was alerted by a neighbor that Gregory Wolford, now identified as the suspect, was seen inside the house. When the homeowner arrived, Wolford was reportedly holding several items and fled out the back door upon being confronted.
Investigating officers, including Sgt. Mines and Deputy Moore, were told that the homeowner initially went outside after hearing her 14-year-old dog scream in pain. She then saw her front door open and found Wolford inside. Witnesses later confirmed seeing him break in.
While inside the home, Wolford is accused of damaging light fixtures, causing around $30 in damages, and attempting to steal prescription drugs. Most disturbingly, he allegedly kicked the homeowner’s senior dog, causing paralysis in the animal’s back legs and leaving it in severe pain.
Wolford fled the scene before officers arrived, but based on victim and witness accounts, he has been charged with burglary, animal cruelty, and destruction of property.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and the community remains shaken by the senseless violence—especially toward an innocent animal.
Wolford will face the charges in Mingo County. The condition of the injured dog remains serious.
