BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRES) – A Raleigh County man has been indicted by a Grand Jury based on a bizarre domestic call late last year involving strangulation, methamphetamine, and an apparent search for a secret wire, among other things.
The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department stated that, on October 3, 2022, Deputies responded to a call pertaining to a domestic incident. Authorities arrived on the scene to find a suspect – Charles Quarles, 40 years old of Dry Creek, WV – wielding a black knife, one of several the Quarles purportedly had on his person at the time of the incident.
The additional weapons were discovered by deputies shortly after their arrival, along with amounts of the drug, crystal meth.
Deputies reported the victim to have displayed visible bruising, including to her face, neck, and head. The victim stated that Quarles had hit her and thrown her around a residence following an argument earlier in the day. He is also said to have pulled the victim’s hair before shaving part of it off in attempts to locate a hidden wire.
The suspect is then reported to have hit the victim with a slapstick, choked her, and pulled a knife on her before threatening to kill her.
Later, after taking the victim to his mother’s residence, the two went to the woods behind the residence where he proceeded to shove her to the ground. Witnesses reportedly attest to having heard screams and witnessing Quarles emerge from the woods wielding a piece of wood.
Upon being questioned by Deputies, Quarles reportedly openly admitted to all charges. He additionally advised that he would drive both himself and the victim off a rock cliff, noting he would stop once he was informed of the location of the wire he believed to be hidden in the victim’s hair.
He reportedly informed authorities that he had driven the victim to his mother’s residence because he was searching for a man with whom he had believed the victim to have been cheating on him.
Quarles was arrested as a result of this incident and was transported to Southern Regional Jail where he would be held on a $50,000 bond. He was indicted by a Raleigh County Grand Jury on charges of Attempted First Degree Murder, Malicious Wounding, Strangulation, Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, and Domestic Battery.
