MONONGALIA COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A man surrendered to deputies Sunday afternoon after a fire broke out at a residence during a welfare check on Aaron Creek Road, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the home at approximately 1 p.m. on May 10, 2026, to conduct a welfare check on a male individual.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies encountered a man experiencing a psychiatric crisis who refused to leave the residence.
A crisis negotiator with the department remained in communication with the individual for several hours in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation.
Authorities said the individual later ignited a fire inside the garage of the residence. The fire quickly spread to the main structure of the home.
The man later surrendered to deputies at the scene without further incident.
Officials said the individual will be evaluated at a local hospital.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department and the Clinton District Volunteer Fire Department.
