WASHINGTON D.C. (LOOTPRESS) — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., split from her party Monday evening, calling for Congress to extend expiring Obamacare subsidies to prevent health insurance premiums from doubling next year — a rare move aligning the outspoken MAGA lawmaker with Democrats on a key issue.
In a lengthy post on X, Greene acknowledged her opposition to the Affordable Care Act but said the upcoming expiration of tax credits would devastate families in her district, including her own children.
“Let’s just say as nicely as possible, I’m not a fan,” Greene wrote. “But I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year, my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district.”
The federal subsidies, which help lower monthly insurance costs for millions of Americans, are set to expire at the end of 2025 unless Congress acts. Democrats have made renewing the program a top priority during the ongoing government shutdown negotiations.
While some moderate Republicans have voiced support for extending the subsidies, many conservatives want to let them lapse as part of a broader effort to cut federal spending. Party leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., have so far declined to commit to an extension.
Greene, however, made it clear she’s not waiting for GOP leadership.
“No, I’m not towing the party line on this or playing loyalty games,” she wrote. “I’m a Republican and won’t vote for illegals to have taxpayer-funded healthcare or benefits. I’m AMERICA ONLY!!!”
Speaking to NBC News, Greene said rising insurance costs are among the most common complaints she hears from constituents.
“All health insurance premiums are already extremely expensive,” she said. “Increasing them further is going to crush people. I’d rather spend money on Americans than fund foreign wars.”
Greene also blasted her party’s leadership for what she described as silence on the issue.
“Not a single Republican in leadership talked to us about this or has given us a plan to help Americans deal with their health insurance premiums DOUBLING!!!” she posted.
Her comments quickly drew attention on Capitol Hill — including from across the aisle.
Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, reposted Greene’s remarks, writing: “I don’t quote MTG often, but… she’s right. GOP leadership has no plan to stop premiums from doubling.”
The unusual alignment underscores growing pressure on Congress to act before year’s end, as both parties weigh political risks ahead of the 2026 election season.
