(LOOTPRESS) – Starting in April 2025, the price of a Mega Millions ticket will increase from $2 to $5 as part of a significant revamp of the popular lottery game. This will be the second price adjustment since the game’s launch in 2002, Mega Millions announced on Monday.
In addition to the price hike, other changes will take effect in the spring, including the elimination of breakeven prizes. According to Mega Millions, this means that every winning ticket will yield more than the cost of the ticket itself.
The revamped game is expected to bring larger starting jackpots that grow faster, resulting in more frequent and bigger prizes. “We are creating a game that both our existing players and newcomers will love,” said Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium. “We expect more billion-dollar jackpots than ever before, creating more billionaires and many more millionaires as the jackpots climb.” Johnston also emphasized that Mega Millions will continue to support important causes across the country.
Since its inception, Mega Millions has produced six jackpots exceeding $1 billion, most recently in March 2023, when a winning ticket sold at a ShopRite in Neptune Township, New Jersey, claimed a $1.128 billion prize.
Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The current odds of winning the jackpot stand at 1 in 302.6 million.
