MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Mercer County Coalition for Healthy Communities invites community members, partners, and local media to attend a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Community Walk celebrating the completion of the Rainbow Bridge Pet Memorial at Glenwood Park.
The event will take place on Thursday, May 1 at 1:00 PM and will recognize a unique community project that blends art, remembrance, and wellness.
The Rainbow Bridge is a symbolic tribute honoring beloved pets who have passed away. Rooted in a widely recognized poem and concept, the “Rainbow Bridge” represents a peaceful place where pets wait to be reunited with their owners. The newly completed memorial bridge at Glenwood Park offers a dedicated space for reflection, healing, and remembrance for individuals and families across Mercer County.
“This project is a meaningful example of how community members can come together to create spaces that promote both emotional well-being and connection,” said Candace Harless, Chairperson for MCCHC. “The Rainbow Bridge is not only a tribute to the bond we share with our pets, but also a place where our community can gather, reflect, and support one another.”
Following the ribbon cutting, attendees are invited to participate in a Community Walk, encouraging at least 20 minutes of physical activity. The walk aligns with the spirit of National Walking Day, a statewide initiative supported by the American Heart Association and national leaders, promoting simple, accessible steps toward improving heart health and overall wellness. While National Walking Day is traditionally observed in April, this local event has been scheduled in May to maximize participation and take advantage of the park’s seasonal accessibility.
Community members are encouraged to attend, bring friends and family, and participate in this effort to promote healthy, connected communities. Participants are also invited to take photos and share their experience on social media to highlight Mercer County’s commitment to wellness and community engagement.
