WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) — West Virginians in Monroe, Greenbrier, and Lewis counties will have access to free or low-cost lung cancer screenings in July, thanks to LUCAS, the state’s first mobile lung cancer screening unit.
LUCAS — short for Lung Cancer Screening — is a state-of-the-art mobile unit operated by WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals and the WVU Cancer Institute. It offers low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans, which can detect lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable.
The mobile unit will be available at the following locations:
-
Alderson Medical Center – July 23, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Call 304-445-3140 for appointments
-
Rainelle Medical Center – July 24, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Call 304-438-6188 ext. 1034
-
Community Care of Weston – July 25, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Call 304-269-9500 ext. 2137
Screenings are billed to private insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare. Uninsured West Virginia residents who meet eligibility requirements can receive screenings at no cost, thanks to grant funding and donations. A physician’s order and insurance pre-authorization are required, and appointments must be scheduled at least 14 days in advance.
LUCAS builds on the success of Bonnie’s Bus, WVU Cancer Institute’s mobile mammography unit, and aims to reduce lung cancer deaths in West Virginia — where the disease claims more lives than colorectal, prostate, and breast cancer combined. LUCAS travels to 42 counties lacking easy access to lung cancer screenings.
