CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Public Service Commission of West Virginia has scheduled a virtual and in-person public comment hearing for July into construction of a $2.48 billion gas-electric generation plant in Monongalia County and three solar energy projects.
The hearing is set for 5:30 p.m. July 15 at the PSC hearing room at 201 Brooks St., Charleston.
On February 13, Monongahela Power Co. and The Potomac Edison Co. filed an application to construct a 1,200-megawatt (MW) combined cycle gas plant at the Fort Martín Power Station in Monongalia County, and to construct 70 MW of solar generation at three sites: Valley Point near Albright, Preston County; adjacent to the town of Davis, Tucker County; and near Weirton. The combined cost of the solar projects is estimated at $182 million.
The application is for an expected shortfall in electrical-generation capacity beginning in 2029.
The companies are seeking an initial surcharge to pay for the projects, which would result in an average increase in customer bills of 0.9 percent, or $1.18 a month.
Those who wish to participate in the public comment hearing should register with the Commission by 4 p.m. on July 10.
