MOUNT HOPE, W.V. (LOOTPRESS) – On March 26, Mount Hope will celebrate its legacy during Hope’s Heritage Day. The promotional event, which was first held in 2019 but was put on hold due to the pandemic, is being sponsored by Harmony for Hope with the help of Active Southern West Virginia, the Mount Hope High School Alumni Association and Marshall University.
Carrie Kidd, Executive Director of Harmony for Hope, shared what past and current Mount Hope residents can expect from this year’s event.
“It’s exciting to bring people back to Mount Hope,” she said, adding that the event is exclusive to the Mount Hope area.
According to Kidd, the day’s events will begin at 1 p.m. with a potluck dinner at the Cottle Mountainair Hotel- located at 401 Main Street. Everyone in the community is invited to bring their best and favorite dish to share. At 1:20 p.m., the Mount Hope Regional Band will perform its spring concert and at 2:30 p.m. the town will offer a tour of the Mount Hope Memorabilia Room. From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., residents will be able to participate in a guided historic walking tour where they may even get the chance to go into some older buildings. All day, Mount Hope will also offer a pop-up museum full of historical items from the area. All events will conclude at 4:30 p.m.
Kidd shared the significance of Hope’s Heritage Day and bringing the community together to remember the past.
“It’s important…it gives a sense of place to the area,” she said. “This sense of place is something that will last within the region once we are even gone. Our children will remember the tradition started or begin their own traditions based on what was started here. This sense of place holds people in the community together.”
With more and more families moving to Mount Hope, Kidd hopes this event will also help them learn more about their new neighbors.
“We are hoping it gives them an idea of what we were like so we can fit in easier and understand the community a little better.”
