CASS, WV (LOOTPRESS) — Rail enthusiasts and photographers will have a rare opportunity this winter as Mountain Rail Adventures launches its first-ever Winter Photography Special to Durbin on Friday, January 16. The exclusive event is limited to just 13 passengers, offering an intimate and highly customizable photography experience along the remote 15-mile route.
The excursion will be powered by Shay No. 5, one of the line’s historic geared steam locomotives. The train will include log cars and a caboose for riders, evoking the region’s early logging and railroad heritage.
Organizers say the small group size will allow for multiple photo stops at scenic and hard-to-access locations, many of which are only feasible when operating with a limited number of participants. Riders should expect a moderate level of physical activity, including stepping off on hillsides and taking short hikes across rough or snowy terrain to reach optimal vantage points.
Important Details for Participants
Restrooms will be available at Cass before departure and again during the lunch break in Durbin, but no onboard restroom will be provided. Lunch is included as part of the event.
Travelers are advised to use caution when driving into Pocahontas County, as winter conditions may affect roadways, although they are generally well-maintained during the season. Ticket prices cover the rail excursion and lunch but do not include lodging or transportation to Cass.
More Photography Events Coming This Spring
For photographers unable to attend the January trip, Mountain Rail will soon open reservations for the Spring Titans of Logging Photography Special, scheduled for May 2–3. That event will offer expanded opportunities to capture historic locomotives and reenactments of West Virginia’s logging-railroad past.
