NASHVILLE, TN (LOOTPRESS) — Nashville International Airport could soon bear the name of country music legend Dolly Parton as Tennessee leaders move forward with a proposal honoring her life and legacy.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport announced Friday, August 28, their intent to name the airport in Parton’s honor. The proposal would create a lasting tribute to the Tennessee native and her impact on music, philanthropy and communities around the world.
Lee said he spoke with Parton’s team about the idea earlier this week. According to the announcement, her team expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support and said they are open to continuing conversations about the proposed tribute.
“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Lee said, adding that Nashville’s airport serves as a fitting place to recognize her music, generosity, faith and kindness.
Parton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, and went on to become one of the most recognizable figures in country music and entertainment.
Her influence also stretches far beyond music. Through the Dollywood Foundation and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, millions of free books have been distributed to children around the world in an effort to promote childhood literacy.
Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, said Parton’s legacy reflects the welcoming spirit Nashville International Airport seeks to represent.
The proposed name change is not yet final.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is scheduled to address its current naming policy and Lee’s proposal during a meeting on September 17. Additional details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
