BARBOUR COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down in Barbour County on the evening of June 22, producing peak winds of 110 mph and damaging homes, trees and other property near Richman Road.
According to the storm survey, the tornado touched down at approximately 7:50 p.m. EDT east of Tygart Lake State Park and traveled about 1.13 miles before lifting two minutes later at 7:52 p.m. The tornado reached a maximum width of 275 yards. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The survey found the tornado began near Richman Road, where a barn was destroyed. Debris from the structure was scattered from northwest to southeast, with some pieces carried more than one-third of a mile to the northeast.
A nearby double-wide home sustained significant siding damage on its south side, and several windows were broken on the west side. An SUV parked beside the home was pushed about two feet to the northeast, while a flagpole in the front yard was blown down toward the southwest.
As the tornado continued across mostly open fields, it crossed several patches of hardwood trees. Near the middle of its path, several healthy, mature locust trees were uprooted and others snapped about 15 feet above the ground. Surveyors also observed a swirling pattern in nearby pasture grass, indicating the tornado’s circulation.
The final evidence of tornado damage was found near Bud Edge Road, where another tree had been blown down. No additional damage was observed beyond that point.
The National Weather Service thanked the Barbour County Office of Emergency Management and 911 officials, along with the affected homeowner, for their assistance with the damage survey.
