CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – As of Monday, nearly 300,000 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in West Virginia will not get their November benefits.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) posted on its website Saturday that November benefits will not go out unless the federal government reopens.
As of Monday afternoon, Congress shows no signs of reaching a deal to reopen the government.
Some states, including Virginia, have informed residents that the state will cover November’s benefits.
In West Virginia, Governor Patrick Morrisey has announced an expedited $1.1 million for food banks to help with the absence of November SNAP benefits.
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 277,400 residents in West Virginia receive SNAP benefits, or 16% of the state’s population.
