MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In recognition of National 988 Day, the Mercer County Coalition for Healthy Communities will host a community event on Monday, September 8, at 10:00 a.m. at the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.
During the event, local EMS agencies and city police departments will be presented with official 988 decals for their vehicle fleets. These decals will be displayed alongside the traditional 911 markings, symbolizing that mental health emergencies are just as urgent and vital as police, fire, or medical crises.
“This is more than just a sticker—it’s a statement,” said Candace Harless, Chairperson for MCCHC. “By placing 988 next to 911, we are sending a clear message: mental health matters, and help is only three digits away.”
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline connects individuals in crisis with trained counselors who provide immediate support and connect callers to local resources. Elevating the visibility of 988 in the community helps break down stigma and ensures residents know where to turn in moments of need.
All community members and media representatives are invited to attend. Brief remarks will highlight the importance of access to mental health care and the role of the 988 Lifeline in saving lives.
