GREENE COUNTY, NC (LOOTPRESS) — A beloved father, husband, and dedicated prison officer from eastern North Carolina died last week after being struck by lightning while fishing — an activity he loved, especially with his son by his side.
Santonio “Tony” Catoe, 39, served as a K-9 officer at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury, Greene County. His passing has left a deep void in both his community and workplace, according to a statement released by the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
Catoe was on his fishing boat with his 9-year-old son, TJ, when a sudden lightning strike claimed his life. His tragic death has led to an outpouring of grief and support across the state. On Thursday, colleagues gathered at the prison to honor his memory, describing him as a man of strong character, unmatched dedication, and a warm, engaging presence.
“Tony was not just a colleague — he was a friend to many, known for the deep respect he showed others and the respect he earned in return,” the department’s release said.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support his grieving family in Greenville. Family friend Andrew Salis, who organized the fundraiser, wrote, “Tony lost his life doing what he loved, with TJ by his side. His love for his family was powerful and unwavering — something many strive for.”
Catoe leaves behind his wife, their two children, TJ and 5-year-old daughter Maya, as well as two stepchildren.
A visitation for the family will be held on Monday, April 21, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Lancaster, South Carolina. Funeral services will follow on Tuesday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home Chapel.
Catoe’s legacy of service and love will live on in the lives he touched — both inside and outside the walls of Eastern Correctional.
