BERKELEY COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A man was fatally shot by law enforcement after allegedly brandishing weapons and threatening to open fire during a domestic incident late Thursday night.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the situation began on February 13 at 11:28 p.m. when EMS responded to a “breathing complaint” for a 65-year-old woman at a residence off Grapevine Road.
When emergency personnel attempted to enter the home, a male suspect reportedly brandished a machete and a rifle.
EMS secured the woman and transported her to Berkeley Medical Center, where she disclosed that she did not have breathing issues but feared for her safety.
Authorities were informed that the suspect had threatened to fire upon law enforcement upon their arrival.
Deputies from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the West Virginia State Police arrived at the scene, establishing a perimeter.
Shortly after midnight on February 14, officers encountered the suspect, who was armed with what appeared to be a rifle.
Authorities say they gave multiple commands for the suspect to drop his weapon, but he refused and raised it in a threatening manner.
Deputies and troopers then discharged their weapons, fatally shooting the suspect.
The Eastern Panhandle Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force is investigating the shooting, while the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division will conduct an internal review.
