SAINT ALBANS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – One person is dead after being hit by a train in Kanawha County.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, on Friday, September 8, 2023, deputies were dispatched to investigate a pedestrian struck by a train on the west side of Saint Albans.
The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the area of Rust Street and Riverside Drive.
Deputies arrived on the scene to find a 42-year-old female had been struck by a CSX train traveling westbound. The female victim, a resident of Saint Albans was taken to CAMC General Hospital for critical life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash.
The female later succumbed to her injuries while at the hospital.
According to the lead investigator, Deputy K.A. Cooper, the victim was walking along the railroad tracks when she attempted to cross in front of the train.
The engineer attempted to warn the female of its presence by blowing the horn, but the female could not clear the tracks before being struck.
The train was placed into emergency braking mode while traveling at approximately 30 mph and eventually came to a stop where CSX personnel were able to provide care to the victim until EMS arrived.
CSX Special Investigators responded to the scene and will be conducting a separate investigation. It is uncertain why the female was trespassing on railroad property or if her actions were intentional.
The West Virginia Medical Examiner was contacted and conducted their own investigation into the death.
