WOOD COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A single-vehicle crash on New Year’s Day left one person with life-threatening injuries after icy road conditions caused a Dodge Durango to lose control on Interstate 77.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on January 1, 2025, as Somers Mello was traveling north on I-77 near Williamstown Pike.
Snow and ice caused Mello to lose control of the vehicle, which entered the median sideways and struck the guardrail dividing the northbound and southbound bridges.
The impact caused the Durango to roll through the median and partially onto the bridge, ejecting Mello.
The vehicle came to rest on Williamstown Pike and caught fire, becoming fully engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived.
Mello was found on the bridge with head trauma and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
