PRINCETON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Severe overcrowding at the Mercer County Animal Shelter has forced the facility to designate a “code red” status as reported Wednesday.
The shelter, currently operating at capacity with additional animals on the waitlist to be brought in, indicated that should homes or rescue options not become available to some of the shelter animals, euthanasia would have to be considered in order to generate additional shelter space.
“Due to the overwhelming amount of animals we currently have, and the amount waiting to come in, we unfortunately are now code red,” read a Wednesday statement from the shelter.
“If we can’t get any animals an adopted or sent to rescue, we will have no choice but to consider euthanasia for space which is something we haven’t had to do in several years.”
”Any of our dogs over a year will be $25.”
As the shelter has not had to implement measures as drastic as euthanasia for a number of years, they are attempting to spread the message as far as possible in order to avoid such an outcome.
“If you have room to open your home and hearts, or if you know of any rescues, please let us know,” the statement continues. “We are truly trying to avoiding making space with euthanasia.”
Those interested in adopting can obtain more information by reaching out to the Mercer County Animal Shelter by phone at (304) 425-2838, or through the shelter Facebook page.
