LEWIS COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Two parents have been arrested after their three-year-old child was critically injured by a gunshot wound in Lewis County.
According to the West Virginia State Police, officers from the Weston and Buckhannon detachments launched an investigation on February 17, 2025, after responding to a shooting on Buckhannon Run Road.
Authorities determined that the child had suffered a single gunshot wound after gaining access to a loaded handgun left within reach by the parents.
On March 4, the child’s biological parents, Caleb Heckert, 29, of Buckhannon, and Corinda Heater, 30, of Orlando, were arrested and charged with one count each of Child Neglect Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
Both are currently being held at the Central Regional Jail on a $100,000 bond.
The child remains in critical condition as the investigation continues.
Assisting agencies in the case include the Morgantown Detachment of the West Virginia State Police, the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations, the State Police Crime Scene Team, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, and the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department.
