WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Authorities are currently investigating injury incurred over the weekend as the result of a detonating explosive device.
According to the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 4:25am on Sunday, October 6, 2024, Captain J.J. Martin of the GCSO met with emergency medical responders with regard to an individual being transported with abdominal pain.
The patient state that he had sustained an injury after being involved in a four-wheeler accident, informing law enforcement that he had been impaled “by a stick or some other type of object.”
Upon observing the injury in question, Captain Martin made note that the injury was inconsistent with the explanation offered by the patient regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. The patient was transported from here to an out-of-area medical facility.
A second individual present prior to the transport agreed to take law enforcement to the location at which the crash purportedly occurred. At this time, Captain Martin would learn that the individual and patient had arrived at the house of a friend the previous night on James River Kanawha Turnpike to ride ATV’s and assist the homeowners in gathering firewood.
Officers noted a lack of evidence at the alleged crash site to suggest that the events had occurred as described by the individuals interviewed. Further investigation and a subsequent interview with the second individual led to law enforcement learning that the patient had accidentally blown up an unspecified explosive decide which he had been handling.
The scene would see response from the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Team along with officers with the West Virginia State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit. Traffic was diverted from the James River Kanawha Turnpike as authorities conducted an investigation into the circumstances of the situation.
The site was ultimately secured and it was determined by officers that no discernible threat remained to members of the public with regard to any potential detonating explosive.
