Paul “Buddy” Ezra Light, 95, of Marie, WV, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023.
Born May 24, 1928, Buddy was the son of the late Talmage Light and Sadie Harmon Light.
Buddy proudly served our country in the US Army during the Korean War. After returning home, he engaged in farming, storekeeping, real estate and auctioneering, but his true love was auctioneering. His father, an auctioneer, had Buddy sell a washstand at the age of 9 at one of his auctions, igniting this lifelong passion. Buddy served as an auctioneer for many years at the Beckley, Narrows, Alderson and Caldwell Livestock Markets. On Saturdays, he was often busy conducting estate sales and countless benefit auctions in Monroe and surrounding counties. He was also the auctioneer for many annual Ham, Bacon and Egg Shows held by West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
Buddy was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Light, his sisters; Ruth Lively and Mildred Wegman, a nephew Jack Light, Jr, and a stepdaughter, Julie Boggs. He is survived by his wife, Julia Larew Long Light and a brother-in-law, Clarence Wegman of Morrisville, NC.
Buddy is also survived by step children Gary Shanklin, Lewisburg, WV; Ernest Long & wife, Elizabeth McIlwain, Charlotte, NC; Suzanne & husband, Eric Pelren, Martin, TN; Wilbur Long & wife, Kelly, Charlotte, NC; a step son-in-law, Charles Boggs II of Dandridge, TN; grand- nieces Tara & husband Ryan Mitchell, Princeton, WV and Sarah and husband, Nathan Turner, Princeton, WV.
He leaves step grandchildren, Gary Shanklin, Jr., Katelyn & Alex Boggs, Laurel & Joseph Pelren, and Clara, Saydeann & Carly Long and a step great grandchild, Kyle Shanklin.
Funeral services will be held at the New Hope United Methodist Church, Marie, WV, at 2PM, Wednesday, December 20, 2023. Visitation will be at the church from 12:30PM to the start of the service. Burial will follow at New Hope United Methodist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church, c/o Kathy Upton, 657 Upton Road, Ballard, WV 24918.
