HUNTINGTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Sunday, May 15, 2022 is observed as Peace Officers Memorial Day, during which state, local, and federal peace officers who have been disabled or have died while in the line of duty are recognized and celebrated.
The Huntington Police Department and Fraternal Order of Police Goldstar Lodge 65 will be hosting the annual Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony this Sunday at 2:30pm in front of the Jean Dean Public Safety Building at 675 10th St.
This will be the first instance of the ceremony being hosted in Huntington since 2019, as it did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to concerns related to the pandemic.
The ceremony pays tribute to fallen officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their state, country, city, and county in the line of duty, and is open to the public. Â
Several towns and cities throughout the state of West Virginia will be hosting recognition ceremonies over the coming days to honor officers for Peace Officers Memorial Day, including Fayetteville, where the F.O.P. Lodge #118 will conduct the annual Police Memorial Service at noon on Friday, May 13, 2022 in front of the Fayette County Courthouse.
The Wheeling Police Department will be hosting their ninth annual Law Enforcement Memorial next week on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. This event will be held at 6:00pm at Wheeling’s Heritage Port, and will take place rain or shine.
A keynote speech will be given by Chad Napier, state coordinator for Appalachia HIDTA, and the Wheeling Police Department Honor Guard will participate in a 21-gun salute and wreath laying as a salute to fallen officers.
Over the Wheeling Police Department’s 216 year history, nine Wheeling Police Officers have lost their lives in the line of duty.
