MOUNT JACKSON, VA (LOOTPRESS) – More than 150 farm animals were seized from a Shenandoah County property after authorities discovered widespread neglect and poor living conditions, according to the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office Animal Control Division said it received a report on April 23, 2026, regarding over 100 animals—including horses, cattle and donkeys—possibly being kept in unsafe conditions.
Deputies later executed a search warrant at a property in the Mount Jackson area.
During the search, authorities found a large number of animals in what officials described as extremely poor condition. Many appeared malnourished, and some showed visible signs of illness.
Deputies also reported finding animal remains in multiple locations across the property.
Officials determined the property lacked adequate food and proper living conditions.
As a result, a total of 152 animals were removed, including 84 horses, 66 cattle and two donkeys.
The operation spanned three days, from April 23 through April 25, and involved more than 60 law enforcement personnel and volunteers. Four teams of Virginia veterinarians assisted in examining the animals.
The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office said it worked alongside animal rescue organizations, the Virginia Department of Agriculture, and additional volunteers during the investigation. The Virginia Attorney General’s Office Animal Law Unit has agreed to oversee prosecution of the case.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Sgt. Sabattis. Authorities say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
