CHARLESTON, W.Va. – It has been 10 years since Capital last lifted a football state championship trophy, with the program falling on hard times in recent seasons. There is, however, reason for optimism if you’re a Cougar fan.
Head coach Jon Carpenter, the man who lifted that trophy on Wheeling Island Stadium 10 years ago, is back on the sidelines at Laidley Field this fall but not just that, he has some really good, young players.
One of those players is sophomore David Robinson, who shined bright in Capital’s 38-14 win against Riverside in Week 3.
Robinson ran for 172 yards and three rushing touchdowns — including an 80-yarder — to go with an interception on defense to lead the Cougars to their first win of the season. For his efforts, Robinson has been named the Lootpress Kanawha Valley Player of the Week. The award is sponsored by The Law Offices of Brandon S. Steele.
“The thing that impresses you most when you’re around him is what a good human being he is,” Carpenter said of Robinson. “He is special as a football player, but he’s just as impressive as a person walking the hallways and as a teammate.
“He’s really a diamond. It’s hard to put into words, he’s hard to describe.”
Robinson and the Cougars (1-1) are back in action Friday on the road at Kanawha County rival St. Albans (0-3).
Poca sophomore running back Spencer Jones, who ran for 148 yards and three touchdowns last week in a Dots’ win against Putnam County rival Buffalo, won the Community Choice fan vote with nearly 57 percent of the more than 24,000 votes cast. Jones advances to the Community Choice poll at the end of the regular season, with the winner of that poll awarded a $500 scholarship by the Lootpress Foundation.
