MARTINSBURG — The typical top deck of a cruise ship is something like the length of three football fields.
Martinsburg senior quarterback Koi Fagan didn’t know the dimensions of the ship he spent time on during a summer vacation.
He didn’t figure he would be able to throw a football the complete distance.
Nor would Fagan even try to run end to end.
“I sure did walk it — multiple times,” Fagan said with a frown. “I didn’t run it.”
The Bulldog made up for that omission Friday night at Walker Stadium.
He kept running and running and running, like he was on the deck of that ship..
Fagan ran for four touchdowns in the first half Friday as Martinsburg rolled to a 42-0 victory over Woodson, D.C., in a matchup of undefeated teams.
Two of the scores covered 63 and 59 yards.
His first two TDs to give Martinsburg a 14-0 lead after one quarter went for 28 and 5 yards, respectively.
Fagan had two long-distance runs for touchdowns nullified by penalty, too.
Fagan ran a dozen times for 182 yards in the first half as Martinsburg led 28-0.
The Bulldogs cruised from there.
“The first half,” Martinsburg coach David Walker said, “we were real sloppy, had a lot of holding penalties.
“We cleaned things up and played better in the second half.”
Fagan ran the ball just once in the second half but hooked up with Boston Todd on a 46-yard touchdown pass play midway through the third quarter to extend Martinsburg’s lead to five touchdowns.
“It was by design,” Walker said. “We didn’t want him to take unnecessary hits.”
The Bulldogs’ final touchdown came as backup quarterback Brian Dick threw 29 yards to Tashawn Cofield.
Fagan enjoyed seeing his teammates joining the action with things well in control.
“It’s always about winning and seeing everybody doing their thing,” Fagan said. “I think they wanted to see some different things, because we were in the lead.”
The Warriors spent little time in Martinsburg territory, but they did have a long touchdown pass nullified by a penalty.
Woodson, which held the Bulldogs to its closest game during an undefeated state title season, was the second of three Washington teams Martinsburg has played in 2024.
Martinsburg shut out both of them.
The Bulldogs are now considered part of the DC Metro area in one ranking system introduced this year by Maxpreps.com.
Martinsburg is ranked fourth, with the three teams ahead of the Bulldogs all private schools. There are 238 teams ranked in all.
Martinsburg hosts Hedgesville (2-0) in a league encounter next week to conclude a four-game home skein to began this campaign.
