Last season Chaz Boggs was a complementary piece for the James Monroe offense.
This season he’s shouldered more of the load following the graduation of players such as Eli Allen and Braydie Carr.
A scat-back type player, Boggs proved his versatility again Friday night when he ran the ball five times for 105 yards and two touchdowns, adding five receptions for 129 yards and two more scores in a 50-26 win over Summers County.
For his efforts Boggs has been named the Week 6 Lootpress Player of the Week by the Lootpress sport writers. Boggs accumulated over 35% of the fan votes, beating Bluefield’s Sencere Fields on the tiebreaker.
The award is sponsored by Little General, The Northside Automotive Group, Dutch Miller Auto and The Law Offices of Brandon Steele. The Kanawha Valley Player of the Week winner will be announced Thursday.
As much as Boggs found personal success, he admitted it mostly came together because of his teammates.
“I think just Layton (Dowdy) putting the passes on the money and the line blocking after I caught it helped,” Boggs said. “The same with the runs too. Everyone was just out in front of me.”
The bigger workload has been a welcomed but Boggs doesn’t think much of it. He’s doing the same things he did last season, just with more volume added. It’s led to a comforting transition into the spotlight.
“The biggest adjustment, I don’t really know if there is one,” Boggs said. “I’m kind of doing the same thing I did last year, I’m just getting the ball more.”
Friday’s performance wasn’t one Boggs expected going into the game. The uptick in touches creates more opportunities over the long haul but totaling over 200 yards and four touchdowns from scrimmage is a rare feat.
“No, not really,” Boggs said laughed. “I didn’t think I’d have a big night. I just got the ball and after seeing the first time I ran it and got the first touchdown I just figured that play would work all night because I had four guys in front of me. I knew it would work but Summers County was a really good team.”
Boggs received the most votes in the fan poll amongst players who have not won, thus he will advance to the Community Choice Poll at the end of the season.
