Ridgeley – No. 9 Herbert Hoover overcame an early fumble and a 10-3 halftime deficit to down No. 5 Frankfort 17-10 on the road and earn the program’s first state championship berth Friday in Ridgeley.
Dane Hatfield scored the equalizer for the Huskies on their first drive of the second half and eventually put the visitors on top for good with his second one-yard score of the game late in the fourth quarter.
With Frankfort driving deep in Hoover territory with just over two minutes to go, Hoover’s Andrew Rollyson intercepted a pass at the goal line, clinching a championship berth for the Huskies.
Hatfield finished with 174 rushing yards and two scores on 31 carries while Randy Hughart added 111 yards on 12 carries.
The Huskies will play Independence in the Class AA state championship game Friday, Dec. 2 at Wheeling Island Stadium.
