Summers County’s offense has proven dynamic and explosive through four weeks.
Last Friday might’ve been the Bobcats’ best showing.
They rushed for 428 yards and threw for 128, piling up 556 yards of total offense in a 68-6 win.
For its efforts, the Summers County offensive line has been named the Week 4 Offensive line of the Week.
The starters Friday were Michael Dick (left tackle), Frankie McClaugherty (left guard), Jonah Pugh (center), Ethan Rodes (right guard) and Bryce Taylor (right tackle).
This season has signaled a shift from the wing-t to the spread in Hinton, a transition that began last season. Regardless of what’s been asked of them, the Bobcats’ front unit has excelled, morphing to the personnel head coach Josh Evans has at his disposal
“We knew we could throw the ball with (Ryan) Oliveros on the outside,” Evans said. “With the wing-T you get nine or 10 guys in the box. It makes it hard to run at times, especially being undersized. This isn’t something new for our guys. They practiced it for five games last year and it was pretty successful in those five games. Brandan (Isaac) threw for about 600 yards in five games last year. We just picked up where we left off. We had some great rushing yards this weak and it was out of our basic wing-t stuff. When you have (Ayden) Plumley and (Damien) Fullen and Oliveros you get them the ball and it opens things up on the ground for us too.”
Friday’s showing against Wyoming East was Summers’ most complete of the season. The Bobcats averaged 15 yards per play en route to scoring nine times. It was the continuation of what Evans, a former offensive lineman at Fayetteville, has seen all season.
“It’s just the grit,” Evans said. “We put up almost 500 yards of offense up against Shady too behind those guys. I think B threw for a little over 300 and we had about 180 rushing. It started that week and they just carried it over. We’ve been physical both weeks and they came in and did what we had to do. That’s a great group of kids and they’re all smart and tough. Two of them – ones going to the army, one’s going to the marines. One of them will be a farmer and Jonah Pugh is liable to be a doctor because he’s a very intelligent kid. They’re gritty kids. They’re not real big but they’re just gritty and get after it.”
