Pipestem – The Summers County golf team is no stranger to the Speidel Course at Oglebay Park in Wheeling where the state high school golf tournament is played each year.
Monday afternoon at Pipestem State Park, the young men from Summers County earned a third straight trip to Ohio County by winning their second straight Class A Region 3 golf title.
Counting the three best scores from the four-man team, the Bobcats bested the field of nine teams with a team score of 226, ahead of second place Charleston Catholic at 243.
The Irish also qualified for the state tournament by finishing second.
Xavier Honaker led the way for Summers County with an even-par round of 72 along with Sean Cooper at 76 and Brian Cooper who shot 78. Marshall Legg had an 84.
Will Gruse led the Irish with 77 and Ben Carew carded an 80. Conner Mayhorn rounded out the team score with an 86, while Michael Strickland ended with a 107.
Rocky Frye from Montcalm qualified as individual shooting a blistering five-under par round of 67 for overall low medalist honors. The other individual qualifier was Andrew Addair from River View with a 75.
