After a week off from the pitch, the Woodrow Wilson boys were back at Paul Cline Stadium hosting Bridgeport Saturday.
The Flying Eagles looked like they hadn’t missed a beat.
Coming off a six-goal performance in a win over Brooke, Woodrow Wilson duplicated that scoring output in a dominating 6-0 shutout of the Indians.
“I was happy to see a lot of goals out there again. For a while today, we were five shots on goal and five goals. Anybody will take that,” Woodrow Wilson head coach Steve Laraba said. “I saw a team today. I saw a team working well together and working hard for each other. It was a team holding each other accountable but being supportive in the same right.”
Woodrow Wilson wasted no time Saturday setting the tone for the game when Jackson Quattrone scored in the 10th minute on an assist from Carson Eckley.
Just six minutes later, the Flying Eagles doubled the lead when Evan Laraba scored off a corner kick from Hayden Johnson.
Laraba’s goal was the first of three that started off the foot of Johnson.
Jack Grimmett made it a three-goal advantage which stood at the break on a goal assisted by Connor Mollohan in the 26th minute.
The Flying Eagles then secured the win with three more goals in the second half. Eckley converted on two tries and Grimmett scored his second of the match for the final margin.
Woodrow keeper Josh Farnsworth kept the Indians at bay with seven saves in the match.
“Bridgeport is a good team. I am really pleased. We had multiple goal scorers and kids with multiple assists. We kept a clean sheet. Overall, I am really pleased. The goal efficiency has to do with experience, but also the stuff that we have been working on. We have some really good players that are really good on the ball and taking chances.”
While Laraba is pleased with his team’s play to this point in the season, he also hopes his team can maintain its level of performance in the coming months.
“We have a tough schedule, and the section is brutal. Greenbrier East and Oak Hill are very good. Princeton will also be a battle,” Laraba said. “I just hope we can maintain the intensity and this level of play. Getting out of southern West Virginia is not easy. We are just going to take it game by game.
