Philippi – Class AA James Monroe went swimming in the deep end of the volleyball pool Saturday and walked away the Silver Division Champion at the Philip Barbour Tournament.
The Mavericks beat Class AAA Shady Spring 2-1 (18-25, 25-19, 15-10) to capture the title.
In the morning pool play, James Monroe split with AAA Frankfort (18-25, 25-10), but dropped both sets to AAAA Cabell Midland (25-17, 25-7) and 2023 AA state runner-up Philip Barbour (25-21, 25-22).
Shady Spring swept AA Ritchie County 2-0 (25-16, 25-19) in pool play. However, the Tigers dropped matches to AAAA University (25-24, 25-22) and AAAA Spring Mills (25-15, 25-22).
James Monroe earned the No. 4 seed in the single elimination tournament, while Shady Spring earned the No. 2 seed.
James Monroe bounced Frankfort, 2-1 (28-26, 15-25, 16-14) before beating No. 1 seed AAA Winfield 2-0 (25-18, 25-23) to advance to the championship match.
Shady’s run to the title match included wins over AAA Robert C. Byrd and AAAA George Washington.
James Monroe travels to Wyoming East Tuesday for a tri-match with the Warriors and River View. Shady Spring is also in action Tuesday when it hosts Greenbrier East and George Washington.
