According to Officer Cornett of the Beckley Police Department, at approximately 6:00pm on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, law enforcement responded to the Barber Avenue area of Raleigh County with regard to reports of shots fired.
Sgt. McCormick with the Beckley Police Department spoke with two individuals in separate residences but was informed by these individuals that they did not witness the event. Attempts to recover shell casings from the area were unsuccessful.
At approximately 6:45pm, law enforcement received another report of a potential domestic incident at the Barber Avenue area.
Responding to the scene, Officer Cornett made contact with a female who stated that the father of her child, Keyon Watts – later identified as Keyon Bennett, born 6/19/2002 – had taken her phone and locked himself inside the restroom in the residence.
The female stated that Bennett had lost his temper, put his hands on her, and struck her in the head, leading to a large knot that law enforcement did observe on her head.
It was further stated that Bennett had gone outside the residence and was standing in the roadway beside a vehicle which had the mother of Bennett’s other child inside.
Bennett is said to have fired one round off into the air before fleeing the scene. This version of events was also corroborated by an additional female at the scene.
Law enforcement discovered a 9mm shell casing at the purported scene of the incident. Bennett has been charged with Wanton Endangerment Involving a Firearm.
