SOPHIA, WV (LOOTPRESS) — The Raleigh County Public Service District (PSD) has announced plans for a major water system improvement project that includes the installation of new water lines and the replacement of a key water storage tank. To help fund the project, the district is proposing a 16% rate increase for water customers.
Project Details
The improvement project includes two main components:

Route 3 Waterline Upgrade: Installation of approximately 45,000 feet of new water lines, upgrades to existing customer connections, new fire hydrants, valves, meters, and repairs to two existing water storage tanks including sandblasting and repainting.

Airport Water Tank Replacement: Demolition of the current tank and construction of a new 1-million-gallon tank, which will double the storage capacity.
Proposed Rate Increases
To pay for the upgrades, the PSD is proposing increases across all customer classes:

The new rates would take effect 45 days after approval by the Raleigh County Commission.
Public Hearing Scheduled
The Public Service Board will hold a public hearing on June 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the District office, 224 East Main Street, Sophia, WV. Anyone wishing to comment on the project or the rate increase is encouraged to attend.
