RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Raleigh County Schools is moving forward with a workforce realignment for the 2025-26 school year, a process that includes reductions in force (RIFs) and staff transfers.
Superintendent Dr. Serena Starcher addressed concerns regarding the changes, emphasizing that while many employees are affected, most will have opportunities to remain employed within the district.
“Student enrollment, funding, and needs of school districts change from year to year,” Dr. Starcher said in a statement to LOOTPRESS.
“Raleigh County Schools is in the process of considering the realignment of its workforce to meet the needs of the school district for the 2025-26 school year.”
Reports from staff and community members indicate that positions in art, STEM, music, and counseling may be among those impacted, though an official list has not yet been finalized.
Hearings for affected employees took place on Wednesday and will resume on Friday before the Raleigh County Board of Education.
Some staff opted for private hearings, while others chose public hearings, which were heavily attended by concerned parents and community members.
Dr. Starcher stressed that the restructuring is largely a reassignment of existing personnel.
“While many employees are impacted by my recommendations, nearly all will have an opportunity for employment with Raleigh County Schools for the upcoming school year,” she stated.
“Finally, given the number of vacancies we currently have in Raleigh County Schools and although their position could be different from the position they currently hold, most affected employees can/will be employed.”
The district has not yet released a final decision on specific position recommendations, as the hearing process is still ongoing.
