CUNARD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – New River Gorge National Park and Preserve will temporarily close Cunard Road (Route 9) for extensive improvements starting Monday, November 4.
The project, led by the Federal Highway Administration, will take place over the winter months and is expected to last until March 31, 2025.
The construction requires a complete closure of Cunard Road and river access.
The closure zone extends from just beyond the Brooklyn Mine Trail parking lot down to river access at Cunard, including Angler’s Access and Brooklyn Campground.
Vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians will be restricted from entering this area.
However, the Brooklyn Mine Trail and Kaymoor Trail will remain open to hikers, who are advised to watch for heavy equipment.
The improvements involve comprehensive road and drainage repairs, including removal of the old road, reinforcement of the roadbed, and installation of a new, more durable surface designed to better withstand weather and heavy use.
Residents and visitors using Routes 9, 14, 16, and 41 should expect increased dump truck traffic during the project.
River users should note that restroom facilities at Cunard and Brooklyn Campground will be closed, as well as all river access points at Cunard, Brooklyn, and Angler’s Access. The Brooklyn Campground will also be closed.
This will be the first of two planned winter closures for this project. For updates and more information, visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/neri or follow the park on Facebook and Instagram.
