CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Republicans officially now outnumber Democrats in Logan County for the first time, while the GOP’s statewide voter registration advantage has surpassed 200,000 voters.
According to the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Sept. 30 voter registration report, Logan County has become the 52nd of West Virginia’s 55 counties to have more registered Republicans than Democrats.
“Logan County has been a Democrat stronghold for as long as anyone can remember,” said West Virginia Republican Party Chairman Josh Holstein. “People there have decided for years that the Democrat Party no longer speaks for them. Their families built this state in the coal mines, and they want leaders who will stand up for their jobs and for their way of life and they have found that home in the Republican Party.”
Delegate Margitta Mazzocchi, R-Logan, also responded to the shift.
“I am excited to see Logan County officially become a Republican-majority county, and I welcome everyone who has joined us in supporting common-sense principles. But a majority on paper does not win an election and we need every Republican to exercise their right to vote and make their voice heard at the ballot box in November. “
Logan County Republican Chair Melissa Ellis-White said the change has been years in the making.
“We are so pleased that Logan County has finally flipped to Republican majority. It has been a long time coming. We are proud of our hard work and role in helping to make this happen.”
Statewide, West Virginia has 526,528 registered Republicans compared with 326,197 registered Democrats, giving Republicans a registration advantage of 200,331 voters.
