CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Senate moved SB460 to a third reading without amendment on Tuesday, advancing legislation that would permit religious and philosophical exemptions to the state’s school vaccination requirements.
During the session, lawmakers proposed four amendments to the bill, all of which failed with some bipartisan support.
- Senator Ryan Weld (R-Brooke) introduced two amendments aimed at allowing private and parochial schools to maintain compulsory vaccination policies or set their own requirements.
- Senator Joey Garcia (D-Marion) proposed an amendment requiring schools and childcare centers to track and maintain records on the number of exempt students.
- Senator Mike Woelfel (D-Cabell) suggested an amendment that would make the polio vaccine the only mandatory immunization under state law.
Despite these efforts, the Senate rejected all proposed changes. A final vote on SB460 is scheduled for today.
