CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – On Tuesday, the West Virginia State Senate Education Committee advanced a bill that would allow graduates of certain institutions of higher education to obtain a tax credit on their personal income tax.
Senate Bill 61, introduced by Senator Eric Nelson (R-Kanawha), would allow any person graduating from an in-state or out-of-state four-year educational institution, community or technical college, or trade school is eligible for a $1,000 tax credit on the person’s personal income tax.
The tax credit may be claimed for five taxable years, including the graduation year. The West Virginia Tax Commissioner may require any information necessary to validate that a person graduated.
The bill was soundly advanced on a voice vote with the recommendation that it be reported to the full Senate with the recommendation that it do pass. Senate Bill 61 will first go to the Senate Finance Committee.
