CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — Senator Mike Stuart has been appointed Chair of the Judiciary Committee for the 86th West Virginia Legislature, marking a significant milestone in the state’s legislative leadership. The announcement was made by incoming Senate President Randy Smith, who expressed confidence in the senator’s ability to lead one of the legislature’s most critical committees.
“It is a tremendous honor and immense responsibility to serve as Judiciary Chair,” the senator stated, reflecting on their personal ties to the state as the son and grandson of West Virginia coal miners. This appointment makes the senator only the second Republican to chair the Judiciary Committee since 1928, following in the footsteps of Senator William Wilkin.
The senator acknowledged the high standard of leadership set by past Judiciary Chairs, including former Senator Charles Trump, now an incoming Justice to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. “I will do my best to honor and maintain their legacy of leadership and their commitment to serving the people of West Virginia,” the senator said.
Priorities for the Judiciary Committee
The senator outlined a conservative agenda for the Judiciary Committee, focusing on:
•Ensuring the safety and security of West Virginia’s citizens
•Promoting transparency in government
•Enhancing personal liberties
•Upholding the Rule of Law
The senator emphasized their dedication to advancing the best interests of West Virginians and supporting the efforts of the legislature’s leadership, including Senate President Smith, Governor-elect Patrick Morrisey, and President-elect Donald Trump.
“I look forward to working with Senate President Smith, members of the State Senate, and the people of our great state to build a greater, more prosperous West Virginia—a ‘shining state on a hill’ for which all other states may aspire,” the senator said.
The Judiciary Committee is a cornerstone of the West Virginia State Senate, handling issues vital to the governance and well-being of the state. This appointment signals a continued commitment to advancing conservative values and strengthening West Virginia’s future.
