CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The National Weather Service has issued two Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for portions of southern and central West Virginia, with storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall.
One warning remains in effect until 1:15 p.m. for north central McDowell County, western Wyoming County, and southeastern Logan County.
As of 12:42 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Hanover, about 10 miles west of Pineville, moving north at 10 mph.
The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and nickel-size hail. Radar indicates the storm could cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
Communities included in the warning include Oceana, Hanover, Mallory, Amherstdale-Robinette, Davy, Clear Fork, Cyclone, Coal Mountain, and Baileysville.
A second Severe Thunderstorm Warning is also in effect until 1:15 p.m. for Boone County, southwestern Kanawha County, and northwestern Raleigh County.
At 12:38 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Madison to Van and were moving east at 15 mph.
These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail. The National Weather Service said hail damage to vehicles is expected, along with potential wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
Locations included in the warning include Charleston, Madison, Chesapeake, Marmet, Belle, Van, Wharton, Coal Fork, Danville, Whitesville, Sylvester, Seth, Leewood, Dawes, Prenter, Ashford, Sharon, Eskdale, Dorothy, and Foster.
The warning also includes portions of the West Virginia Turnpike between mile markers 77 and 95 and Route 119 near mile marker 56.
Residents in the warned areas are urged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. The National Weather Service warns that the storms are producing damaging winds, large hail, continuous cloud-to-ground lightning, and torrential rainfall that could lead to flash flooding. Motorists are advised not to drive through flooded roadways.
