MARTINSVILLE, VA (LOOTPRESS) — The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday evening at a residence on AL Philpott Highway.
Deputies were dispatched to 8884 AL Philpott Highway on December 5, 2025, at approximately 7:45 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire and a person who had been shot.
According to investigators, a small gathering was underway inside the home when people inside heard a loud knock at the back door and a man shouting. When residents went to check the disturbance, they encountered an armed male at the door.
Investigators say individuals from inside the home stepped outside and were physically assaulted by the man. They retreated back into the residence, and the intruder attempted to force his way inside. During the confrontation, multiple shots were fired, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the armed intruder and someone inside the home.
The intruder — identified as Jessie Lee Robert Rumley, 50, of Martinsville — was struck during the exchange and died from his injuries. His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke for an autopsy.
The entire incident was recorded on the home’s surveillance system, which investigators and the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office are currently reviewing.
Authorities say the occupants of the residence have been cooperating fully with the investigation. Crime scene personnel processed the area, gathered physical evidence, and collected witness statements.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Travis C. Martin, 43, has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon under Virginia Code §18.2-308.2. No additional charges were immediately announced.
