OAK HILL, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Residents in the Oak Hill area can expect sewer system smoke testing to take place from April 13 through April 17, according to local officials.
The testing will be conducted by The Thrasher Group in coordination with the Oak Hill Sanitary Board.
Officials say the process is a cost-effective way to identify issues such as leaking sewers, lost manholes, faulty connections, and points where rainwater may be entering the sanitary sewer system.
Testing will occur daily between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
During that time, residents may notice smoke coming from sewer vents or, in some cases, entering homes through faulty sewer connections.
Authorities emphasized that the smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, and does not pose a fire hazard. However, individuals may experience minor respiratory irritation if they come into direct contact with it.
Officials advise residents not to be alarmed if smoke is seen and note that opening windows and doors will help it dissipate quickly.
If smoke or odors enter a home, it may indicate a plumbing issue that should be reported immediately to the Oak Hill Sanitary Board and inspected by a plumber. Property owners are responsible for correcting any defects found on private property.
Residents are encouraged to pour water into all household drains in the days leading up to testing to ensure sewer traps are properly filled. Those with respiratory conditions such as asthma or emphysema are asked to notify officials in advance.
For more information, residents can contact the Oak Hill Sanitary Board at 304-469-9541 during regular business hours.
