South Charleston – Greenbrier West’s return to the state tournament after a four-year hiatus didn’t go as the Cavs hoped.
St. Marys rallied from a 4-2 deficit Wednesday evening, handing the Cavaliers a 7-4 loss in the Class A state tournament at Little Creek Park.
The loss eliminates Greenbrier West as St. Marys moves on to face Petersburg Thursday morning with a Class A title game berth on the line.
After yielding a 2-0 lead to the Blue Devils, West put its first two runners on base in the in the top of the second inning with Michaela Alley driving in the Cavs’ first run of the game. Julia Herndon’s fielder’s choice knotted the game and a two-our error on St. Mart’s part allowed Herndon to race home and give the Cavs a 3-2 lead.
A Brooklyn Adkins bunt single in the third scored Preslee Treadway to give the visitors on the scoreboard the advantage but it slipped away when Ava Childers doubled to score Zoey Winland and Alyssa Winland.
An RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth broke a 4-4 tie and the Blue Devils padded their lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to account for the final score.
West finishes its season at 23-4 but will bring back a stooge core of players including Julia Herndon, Brilee Redden, Preslee Treadway and Maddie Fields.
