SUTTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A West Virginia man is charged after a 3-year-old child died due to child abuse and neglect.
According to police, a call came in about a 3-year-old child unresponsive. When EMS arrived, they found the 3-year-old unresponsive and a 1-year-old. Samuel Workman called 911, but he left the residence when EMS arrived and later showed up at the Braxton County Emergency Room. The 3-old-year was transported to Braxton County Memorial Hospital, and attempts were made to revive the child but were unsuccessful, and the child was pronounced dead. The child had visible bruises and trauma all over his body, including bruising and swelling of the face, head, chest, back, and arms, along with other wounds indicative of receiving extreme physical abuse.
Officers discovered Workman at the hospital, and he had apparent fresh visible wounds, redness, and swelling on both hands around his knuckles. Workman also had blood on his clothes and other unknown fluids on his clothes as well.
Workman stated he had left the residence on several occasions and traveled to a friend’s to engage in smoking illegal marijuana while the two children were left alone. Workman stated he then traveled back to his home and discovered the child unresponsive. He then said he attempted CPR on the child for 20-30 minutes before calling 911.
Workman is the stepfather of the two children and is charged with a child’s death due to child abuse and child neglect resulting in death. Additional charges are also pending. He is currently in Central Regional Jail under a 250,000 cash-only bond.
